There are 33.7 billion transistors on the M1 Pro (which is more than two times the amount in the M1) and 57 billion transistors on to M1 Max (70 percent more than M1 Pro and 3.5x more than M1). Multithreading technology (such as Intels Hyperthreading or AMDs Simultaneous Multithreading) provides increased performance by splitting each of the processors physical cores into virtual cores, also known as threads. But there are more differences than that that add up to some really big performance gains.Īpple uses a 5-nanometer process technology for the Pro and Max versions of the M1, as it did with the M1, but this time it has packed in even more transistors. The Max can also support double the amount of memory as the Pro – 64GB RAM compared to 32GB. How is the M1 Pro different to the M1 Max?Īs you can see from the specs above, the most obvious difference between the M1 Pro and M1 Max is the number of graphics cores (there is no difference in terms of CPU cores).

However, for the average Mac user a M1 Mac will be sufficient. If you need a more powerful machine then the Macs with the M1 Pro are the way to go. For one thing it can only support up to 16GB Unified Memory, which for some users simply isn’t enough. Apps running on M1 chips can use both the efficiency cores and the performance cores at the same time. The M1 is incredibly powerful, but there are a few drawbacks. 40-core CPU (32 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores). It debuted in the MacBook Air, Mac mini and two 13in MacBook Pro models in November 2020 and then was used in the 24in iMac that launched in 2021. The M1 was Apple’s first system on chip made for the Mac. Read M2 vs M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra to find out more.įor more processor related advice read: Which Mac processor? In this article we will run thorough the details about Apple M1 series of chips, explaining how they are different to each other and how they compare to the M1. But those users should wait until Apple reveals its Mac Pro with Apple silicon to see how the company will address the GPU demands made by professionals in the field.Next up could be an even more powerful variant of the M1 – two M1 Ultra could be combined in a Mac Pro to create an M1 Extreme for use in the 2022 Mac Pro. Professionals whose workflows rely heavily on GPU performance will find that the M1 Ultra with either the 48- or 64-core GPU will offer more brute force than the M1 Max. 0 - Car Chase Offscreen Adding the M1 Max with a 24-core GPU adds 500/500/AU750 to the price, while the M1 Max with a 32-core GPU.

For CPU performance, the M1 Max and Ultra posts Single-Core. Geekbench has been used for years as a point of reference for performance on Macs. The M1 Ultra with a 48-core GPU bests this with scores of 91,949 and 70,464, respectively. There is one workflow situation where you might be better off not investing anything just yet. M1 Max vs M1 Ultra: Geekbench 5 CPU benchmarks. The M1 Max posted a Metal score of 69676 and an OpenCL score of 60,667. If you do need to do heavier photo work, however, the higher RAM limits of the Ultra can come in handy. Again, recognize what your workflow demands, and then pick accordingly. If you’re a photo editor, the almost identical single-core performance of both models will mean you’re better off with the cheaper version in terms of value. If you’re heavy into ProRes and video codecs such as H.265, having double the accelerators found in the Ultra will give you great performance gains. The multi-core gains speak for themselves–the Ultra is the best of the M1 series. The Mac Studio M1 Ultra can sometimes double the performance of the M1 Max version, depending on your use case.
